ETP For Biomedical/Pharmaceutical Waste Industries

In pharmaceutical and biomedical manufacturing, water is a critical resource utilized extensively at multiple stages of production. As a result, the generated wastewater and effluent are not only abundant but also hazardous, containing a complex mix of organic compounds, chemicals, solids, and biological contaminants. Proper treatment is essential before discharging into the environment.

At Hydro Water Industries, we provide cutting-edge Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) tailored for pharmaceutical and biomedical waste industries. Our solutions are designed to ensure compliance with the latest CPCB/PCB regulations while delivering high-performance, energy-efficient, and cost-effective treatment systems.

Why Choose ETPs for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Industries?

Effluent generated in these sectors often contains:

  • High COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand)

  • Sulphates and phosphates

  • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and TSS (Total Suspended Solids)

  • Residual antibiotics, hormones, solvents, and pathogens

  • Oils, greases, and potentially hazardous organics

Conventional treatment methods often fail to meet the required discharge norms for these complex effluents. That’s where Hydro Water Industries’ ETP solutions come in – engineered with a focus on safety, sustainability, and scalability.

Wastewater Characteristics – Before and After Treatment

SNParameterBefore TreatmentAfter Treatment
1Temperature25°C – 35°C≤ 5°C above ambient
2ColourLight yellowishColourless
3OdourPresent (mild)None
4pHVariable6.5 to 8
5TSSPresentWithin prescribed limits
6Oil and GreasePresentRemoved
7BODPresentReduced as per PCB norms
8CODPresent≤ 150 mg/l

Note: As BOD is distributed evenly in daily discharge, separate BOD removal is typically not required.

ETP Treatment Flow Process

  1. Preliminary Treatment & Equalization

    • Wastewater from all departments is collected and homogenized in an underground equalization tank

    • Bar screen removes larger solids

    • Oil and grease trap eliminates floating contaminants

    • Air agitation ensures uniform mixing

  2. Chemical Treatment & Coagulation

    • Effluent is transferred to a flash mixer where coagulants are dosed

    • Dosing is automated via precision dosing pumps

    • Air agitation in dosing tanks enhances mixing efficiency

    • Coagulated water flows into a clari-flocculator

  3. Clarification & Sludge Separation

    • Flocculants promote settling of impurities into sludge

    • Tube settler with inclined PVC TubePac media ensures high-efficiency solid-liquid separation

    • Sludge is directed to sludge drying beds or a filter press

    • Dewatered sludge cakes are sent to PCB-approved disposal sites

  4. Filtration and Disinfection

    • Treated water is stored in a treated water holding tank (TWHT)

    • Water passes through a Dual Media Filter (DMF) to remove TSS

    • Further treated in Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) to eliminate color, odor, and organic traces

    • Optional chlorine dosing for microbial safety

  5. Reuse or Disposal

    • Treated water can be reused in non-critical operations or discharged for horticultural applications
